Delhi Aerocity Metro to Become Key Hub under Phase 4 Expansion

Delhi’s Aerocity Metro station is set for a major transformation under Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro project, with plans to develop it into one of the network’s most important interchange hubs. The upgrade aims to significantly improve connectivity between south Delhi, the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the wider Delhi-NCR region.

At present, Aerocity is a station on the Airport Express Line. Under the Phase 4 expansion, it is being upgraded to serve as an interchange with the Tughlakabad–Aerocity Golden Line, which is currently under construction. In a further boost to airport access, approval has been granted to extend the Golden Line from Aerocity to the Terminal 1 IGI Airport station. This 2.263-km extension will directly connect the domestic terminal to the Metro network.

The station is also being designed with long-term integration in mind. According to a PTI report, structural provisions are being incorporated to enable a future interchange with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation’s proposed Alwar corridor. If implemented, this would allow Aerocity to function as a rare triple interchange station, linking the Airport Express Line, the Golden Line and the NCRTC network.

The upgraded station will offer both platform-to-platform connectivity and concourse-to-concourse paid-area access between the Airport Express Line and the Golden Line, ensuring smooth passenger transfers. The platforms will be located at a depth of around 22 metres, while the Golden Line station will extend nearly 290 metres—longer than a typical interchange—to manage complex transfer requirements. The alignment places the Golden Line and the proposed NCRTC corridor crossing diagonally, with key structural elements already planned.

Once operational, the interchange is expected to greatly improve airport access from south Delhi areas such as Tughlakabad, Ambedkar Nagar and Khanpur. Passengers travelling to Terminal 1 will gain direct Metro access, while Terminal 1D users can connect to the Airport Express Line via Aerocity. As of early 2025–26, the Delhi Metro spans nearly 395 km with 289 stations. Phase 4 will add 44 stations, increasing interchange points from 29 to about 47 across Delhi-NCR.
