GMRL Seeks Land For Power Substation For Gurugram Metro

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has initiated a process to acquire land to build a power substation to support the Gurugram metro network, the company has informed local authorities. The move is described as necessary to ensure reliable traction power and to meet increasing demand as new sections are commissioned. GMRL has reportedly identified several potential sites near existing corridors and is engaging with municipal officials and landowners to expedite clearances.

The proposed facility is intended to strengthen the electrical infrastructure and provide redundancy for the metro system to reduce the risk of service disruption. Officials indicated that the substation will integrate with the regional grid and include space for control equipment and transformer bays. Planning documents are being prepared to address land use, environmental safeguards and technical specifications, with timelines linked to upcoming project phases.

GMRL plans to follow statutory procedures for land acquisition and will pursue negotiated purchases where feasible, aiming to minimise social impact. Compensation frameworks and rehabilitation measures are expected to be part of agreements with affected owners, and municipal agencies will be consulted to align the site selection with urban development plans. The agency conveyed that community engagement and prompt resolution of objections will be prioritised.

Construction approvals and procurement processes are anticipated to proceed once the site is secured, with attention to safety standards and grid connectivity. The substation is presented as a key element in permitting higher service frequencies and supporting extensions of the network, and project managers are coordinating with electricity utilities to finalise technical integration. Officials expect that timely action on land acquisition will be critical to meet the metro programme schedule.
