HCC-KEN consortium wins Chennai metro phase 2 contract for line 5

Apart from Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), the Hindustan building company – KEC International (HCC-KEC) joint venture (JV) was awarded a contract for the construction of Chennai Metro Phase 2 for Line-5 of 47-km.

The JV was the lowest bidder for the 11.61-kilometer Puzhuthivakkam – Sholinganallur stretch, which covers 11 stations at Line-5 of the extreme southern end.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) issued a request for proposals for the building of this package in November 2020, with an undisclosed budget and a 36-month timeline. At the end of June, technical bids were opened, revealing three bidders.

Nearly 11.61 km long Construction of Elevated viaduct from Ch: 33710 m to 45320 m between Puzhuthivakkam Metro Station and beyond Elcot Metro station including the construction of eleven numbers of elevated stations at Madipakkam, Echangadu, Kovilambakkam, Kilkattalai, Medavakkam Koot Road, Kamaraj Garden Street, Medavakkam Junction, Vellakkal, Perumbakkam, Global hospital, and Elcot and all related works in Corridor-5 of Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-2.

CMRL’s estimation for this project is not known, so an assessment of how HCC – KEC’s bid is placed can’t provide and the chances of it getting awarded. If granted, this will be their second win after Line-4 of the 7.945 km Porur – Poonamallee Bypass section, where work started in May.

With this development, here’s the state of all civil packages on Line-5. Financial bids for just one more package UG6 are remaining to be opened, and you already know who’s going to be the lowest bidder.
