Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B Gets Cabinet Approval

The Telangana state cabinet has approved Phase 2B of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, with the planned expansion estimated at Rs 195.79 billion. The project will be jointly implemented by the State and Central Governments and aims to extend the city’s metro network by an additional 86.1 kilometres.

Details of Phase 2B Expansion

The second phase will include three major corridors, combining elevated, underground, and at-grade sections to improve urban mobility across key regions of Hyderabad:

  • Corridor 1 will stretch from Shamshabad Airport to Future City over 39.6 km, comprising 21 km of elevated track, 1.5 km underground, and 17 km at grade.
  • Corridor 2, a 24.5 km elevated route from Jubilee Bus Station to Medchal, will feature 18 stations.
  • Corridor 3 will run 22 km from Jubilee Bus Station to Shamirpet, combining 20.35 km elevated with 1.65 km underground, and will include 14 stations.

The completed Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), prepared by Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML), outline route alignments, estimated costs, and execution strategies. These documents will be submitted to the Central Government for approval and joint implementation.

Hyderabad Metro: Current Status

The Hyderabad Metro, overseen by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), currently operates across three corridors covering 69 km. It remains the world’s largest metro system developed through a public-private partnership model, offering efficient, high-capacity urban transport to the city’s residents.

Phase 2B is expected to significantly enhance connectivity to emerging urban zones and major transport hubs, aligning with the city’s long-term infrastructure vision.
