Mumbai Metro One Launches WhatsApp Metro Pass

Mumbai Metro One (MMO) has launched a fully digital metro pass distributed entirely through WhatsApp for commuters on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor. The service allows passengers to purchase multi-trip passes and stored-value travel and to add passes to Google Wallet and Apple Wallet for offline presentation. The initiative, promoted by Reliance Infrastructure, removes the need for a physical metro pass and aims to simplify daily travel. The passes are issued and managed within the messaging platform and can be presented at fare gates via mobile wallets.

Commuters access the service by initiating a WhatsApp conversation with the official channel and selecting trip or stored-value options, after which the ticket is generated and added to the selected digital wallet. The stored-value option permits incremental top ups and can be used across authorised journeys without a paper ticket. The process maintains a digital record of transactions and reduces dependency on ticket counters. Payment options are handled within the chat flow.

The integration with Google Wallet and Apple Wallet enables offline access to passes and supports contactless validation at entry points, which helps streamline passenger movement during peak hours. The digital pass system reduces handling of physical media and aligns with broader efforts to digitise urban transport services. Operational control and customer support remain with the operator and promoter. The format preserves traveller privacy by minimising the need for physical interaction.

The rollout covers the entire Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor and is available to commuters immediately. MMO will monitor adoption and manage updates through the messaging channel and its backend systems. Commuters are advised to use the official WhatsApp channel for purchases. Passengers should ensure their mobile wallets are updated to the latest versions and follow on screen prompts to complete activation and top up balances before travel or contact customer support via the official channel for assistance.
