Northern Railway Boosts Kashmir Apple Transport

Northern Railways supplied 21 container-based wagons on Monday to transport apples from Kashmir, further supporting the region’s apple industry, officials said.

Over 6,400 tonnes of apples were moved from Kashmir to Delhi last week using both bogie covered wagons (BCN) and parcel coaches from the Anantnag Goods Shed Terminal. Each wagon carried approximately 76 special containers, each weighing 40 kilograms, and was supplied at Bari Brahmana for loading.

To further assist the apple sector, the Jammu Railway division arranged for crates and racks from cold storage units in Lassipora, Pulwama district, to be loaded onto a BCN rake from Bari Brahmana Railway Station bound for Anantnag. For the first time, insulated steel puff panels, which enhance energy efficiency and enable better temperature-controlled storage, were also unloaded at Anantnag.

Parcel trains continue to efficiently transport perishable goods. Since September 11, 2025, two parcel van coaches—one for Jammu and another for Adarsh Nagar, Delhi—have been operating. Each van carried around 23 tonnes of goods, with one reaching Adarsh Nagar from Budgam in under 21 hours, and the other reaching Jammu in less than six hours.

On September 15, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off an eight-parcel van train, each with a capacity of 23 tonnes, from Srinagar to Adarsh Nagar, Delhi. These trains reached their destination considerably faster than road transport.

Expanding the service to other goods, over 500 tonnes of mustard oil and additional food items have been transported from Bari Brahmana to Budgam, ensuring essential supplies remain unaffected despite road connectivity disruptions.
