Rail link between Udhampur and Srinagar-Baramulla nearing completion

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project is nearing completion, with 90 per cent of its sanctioned cost of Rs 370.12 billion already spent. When the project is completed, Kashmir will be connected to the rest of the country.

The prestigious national project, which is being personally monitored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railway Minister, is progressing.

The USBRL project's latest sanctioned cost is Rs 370.12 billion. The total expenditure booked up to February 23 is Rs 334.21 billion, or 90.29 per cent of the total sanctioned cost.

The Railway Ministry approved the construction of a railway line from Udhampur to Baramulla via Srinagar in three stages: 25km from Udhampur to Katra in 1994, 118 km from Qazigund to Baramulla in 1999, and 129 km from Katra to Qazigund in 2000.

Because of the USBRL's importance in providing seamless and trouble-free connectivity to Kashmir, the 272 km-long project was designated as a "National Project" in 2002.
