Virar-Dahanu Rail Quadrupling Reaches 64 Per Cent

The Virar-Dahanu Road Quadrupling Project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-Three has recorded 64 per cent physical progress, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd said on Wednesday. The civil and infrastructure works are advancing across the corridor as authorities seek to enhance capacity on the Western Railway route.\n\nThe scheme was sanctioned at a cost of Rs 3,578 crore, equivalent to Rs 35.78 billion (Rs 35.78 bn), to augment suburban and long distance services between Virar and Dahanu Road. Work is being carried out in phases under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-Three with coordination among multiple contractors and railway departments. The upgrade has enabled 15-car trains to run from upgraded platforms at several stations along the corridor.\n\nThe July 2026 progress update recorded around 30.35 lakh cubic metre of earthwork and 2.48 lakh cubic metre of blanketing as completed, which converts to around three point zero three five million cubic metre (3.035 mn cubic metre) and zero point two four eight million cubic metre (0.248 mn cubic metre) respectively. The project has also delivered four road underbridges, one road overbridge, 13 major bridges and 54 minor bridges to date. These structures are integral to reducing road traffic interference and improving line speeds.\n\nFurther civil milestones are scheduled as track works, signalling and ancillary systems continue, while station improvements proceed to handle longer formations and higher passenger volumes. The MRVC reported coordinated progress on piling, embankment filling and bridge erection across identified sections. Project documentation indicates testing and commissioning of upgraded track sections and signalling will follow completion of civil tasks to ensure safe operations and timetable integration with existing suburban services. The ongoing works are aimed at increasing capacity and operational flexibility on the Western Railway corridor between Virar and Dahanu Road.
