Shipping Ministry orders all ports to ensure 0% wait time by 2025

The Shipping Ministry has directed all major ports to establish enough infrastructure by 2025 to achieve 0% waiting time for inbound and outgoing goods.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) said in an office memorandum that port capacity requirements in 2047 will be almost six times the current port capacity.

As per the report, major ports should do thorough planning. In case there are limitations on waterfronts and or land availability, the major ports will look into the idea of establishing satellite ports.

The memorandum revealed that the main port authorities must draught a comprehensive master plan for the whole port region by 2047, encompassing freight predictions, warehousing, and other aspects, with the ultimate goal of achieving efficient logistics for economic development.

In China and Europe, 9,000 cargo ships are stranded outside key ports, causing logistical problems.

By 2025, all major ports must have enough infrastructure in place to achieve zero waiting time for inbound and outgoing goods, i.e., ships, trains, and trucks transporting cargo to and from port should not be forced to wait.

According to the memorandum, the Indian Ports Association (IPA) has been asked to work with all port authorities to put in place an appropriate system that is to the Maritime Vision 2030 and 2047, as well as other MoPSW efforts.
