Assam Gets Mumbai Land for Public Welfare Projects

In a significant boost to Assam’s development efforts, the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) has allotted four bighas of prime land in Mumbai’s Colaba to the Government of Assam on a 60-year lease, aimed at developing essential public infrastructure for the benefit of its citizens.
The land transfer follows a formal request from the Chief Secretary of Assam to the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced the decision, stating it reflects the central government’s continued support for people-centric projects in Assam, particularly in healthcare, education, and social welfare.
Calling it a “people-first initiative”, Sonowal noted, “By making this land available for 60 years, we are enabling the creation of critical infrastructure that will serve generations to come. This plugs a long-standing aspiration of the people of Assam to have a presence in Mumbai for healthcare, education and entrepreneurial access.”
He also shared that Assam’s Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had expressed his appreciation, calling the step a “vital contribution to Assam’s growth story” and a milestone in its development journey.
While specific project plans are still under discussion, government officials hinted at a multi-use facility that may include medical centres, educational hostels, welfare support systems, and even an incubation hub for Assamese entrepreneurs in Mumbai. The 60-year lease gives Assam the long-term flexibility to develop sustainable, high-utility projects.
Sonowal underscored the central government’s commitment to the Atmanirbhar Northeast vision. He said, “Mumbai is India’s financial hub. With this dedicated land parcel, entrepreneurs and citizens from Assam can tap into the opportunities of the maximum city.”
The move is expected to strengthen the link between Assam and Mumbai, expanding access for patients, students, and small business owners from the Northeast, while accelerating inclusive development across regions.
