Rajnath Singh Approves 250 MW Solar Plant On Defence Land

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the establishment of a 250 megawatt (MW) solar power project in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, to be developed on approximately 850 acres of vacant defence land. The ministry described the initiative as the first-of-its-kind undertaken on defence land to combine large-scale solar generation with integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) support. The project is intended to exploit underutilised defence assets while aligning with national renewable energy goals.

The defence ministry characterised the scheme as a major step towards promoting renewable energy and ensuring optimum utilisation of vacant land held by defence establishments. It was said to reflect the government's commitment to clean energy, sustainability and a reduction of dependence on conventional energy sources. Officials noted the move is consistent with wider efforts to decarbonise public sector energy consumption.

The ministry indicated that, besides strengthening long-term energy security for the armed forces, the plant is expected to substantially reduce expenditure on procurement of conventional grid power for defence establishments. Such reductions were described as likely to generate significant savings to the government exchequer over the life cycle of the project. The integrated BESS is intended to enhance grid stability and support peak demand management for nearby defence facilities.

NTPC will implement the project through a competitive bid process to realise the most optimal energy pricing and savings for defence establishments, and the implementation will be coordinated with the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE). The ministry presented the scheme as a convergence of national security, energy security, technological innovation and environmental sustainability, emphasising the use of defence assets to support national development while safeguarding strategic interests.
