Vishvajit Sahay Assumes Charge As Secretary Defence Finance

Shri Vishvajit Sahay assumed charge as Secretary (Defence Finance) in the Ministry of Defence on 1 May 2026. He is a 1990 batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) and was serving as the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) before this appointment. The transfer was notified by the government through the Press Information Bureau.\n\nSahay is an alumnus of St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi and holds a law degree. He brings over three decades of experience in defence finance and public administration. His background is said to combine technical accountancy expertise with experience in policy implementation.\n\nOver the course of his career he has occupied senior posts across ministries and departments. He served as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Department of Science and Technology and as Joint Secretary in the Department of Heavy Industries. He was Finance Manager in the Acquisition Wing of the Ministry of Defence and served as Director in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.\n\nWithin the Defence Accounts Department he held roles including Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions), Prayagraj, Joint Controller General of Defence Accounts and Special Controller General of Defence Accounts. He has represented India at international training forums at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and at the George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies in Germany. The appointment is expected to strengthen financial management and strategic decision making in the Ministry of Defence.\n\nThe assumption of charge follows a senior administrative progression within the Indian defence finance cadre and will involve oversight of budgeting, accounts and pension matters. The change took effect on 1 May 2026 and was recorded in the official release by the Press Information Bureau.
