BMC’s Rs 20 bn megaproject to transform Mithi River

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a massive Rs 20 billion project stretched over a period of four years to overhaul the 17.8 km-long Mithi river.

The main goals of the massive construction projects are to stop the Mithi from overflowing during heavy rains, enter its low-lying surroundings like Sion, Chunabhatti, Kurla, and Ghatkopar, and improve the banks' aesthetics.

The initiative, entitled the "Mithi River Water Quality Improvement Project," officially began on October 1. BMC will put 26 floodgates in the river, which originates at Vihar Lake and joins the Arabian Sea at the Mahim Causeway, in accordance with the plan's concept.
The installation of sluices, estimated at Rs 10.3 billion, is intended to stop the seasonal flooding of localities including Kranti Nagar, Bail Bazaar, and Taximen's Colony.
