DDWS Hosts Greywater Workshop

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, organised a virtual workshop on “Greywater Management and Reuse” as part of preparatory sessions for the upcoming Sujalam Bharat Summit, scheduled for the end of November under the chairmanship of Union Minister C R Patil.

The Sujalam Bharat Summit is one of six departmental summits conceptualised under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at incorporating grassroots perspectives into national policy. Coordinated by NITI Aayog and anchored by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the summits seek to strengthen the feedback loop between national missions and field-level implementation to ensure effective, locally responsive strategies.

The workshop was chaired by Kamal Kishore Soan, ASMD (SBMG & JJM), and attended by Archana Varma, ASMD-NWM, Secretary DDWS Ashok K K Meena, State Nodal Officers, sector experts, and representatives from development partners. In her opening remarks, Smt. Varma highlighted the importance of greywater management, noting that proper reuse can save up to 30–40 per cent of water.

Soan underlined the critical role of greywater systems in the context of the Jal Jeevan Mission, emphasising solutions that are climate-resilient, technically sound, and adaptable to local community needs. The workshop provided a platform for mid-level officers, scientists, and practitioners to share insights and contribute to national and state-level water and sanitation strategies.
