PMC proposes Rs 3.57 bn plan for flood management to Central govt

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) put forth a proposal of Rs 3.57 billion to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), seeking funding for the Union government's Urban Flood Management Project.

As per the 15th Finance Commission for 2021-26, Pune was chosen as one of seven cities for urban flood risk management to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change and heavy rainfall.

The NDMA approved an annual allocation of Rs 500 million for the city until the fiscal year 2025-26.

In accordance with the project agreements, the civic body submitted a comprehensive report for implementation by the road department, drainage department, and river improvement department.

In response to this development, Ganesh Sonune, the head of PMC's Disaster Management Department, mentioned that the central government had granted the funds but required the PMC to provide a detailed plan to address flood-like situations in the city. Sonune stated, "We have devised a strategy outlining how the allocated funds will be utilised by the PMC to address rain-related emergencies."

Sonune further stated that the civic body had identified 137 locations across the city where flood issues are prevalent.

"PMC's primary proposal entails the installation of stormwater lines and a box drainage system along the road to tackle chronic waterlogging. Additionally, PMC intends to use these funds to restore an old drainage system."
