Coal India Commissions 100 MW Solar Plant in Gujarat

Coal India Limited has commissioned a 100 Megawatt (MW) solar plant in Gujarat as part of a wider diversification initiative. The plant represents a move by the state miner to expand its energy portfolio beyond coal and to support cleaner generation options. The project was described by the company as operational and integrated with local distribution networks.

The plant will supply power for onsite use and for feed into regional grids to assist local demand management. Company officials said the capacity will help moderate electricity costs for operations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with thermal generation. The installation uses photovoltaic panels and associated control systems to convert solar radiation into usable electricity.

The move aligns with a stated strategy to diversify revenue streams and to lower carbon intensity across the group. Coal India has been exploring renewable energy options including solar and wind projects to complement its core mining activities. Investment in generation capacity is intended to provide long term energy security for mines while offering an alternative revenue avenue as demand patterns evolve.

Analysts view the commissioning as part of a broader shift among large public sector miners toward cleaner sources of power. The company expects to leverage existing land and logistical assets to roll out further projects without compromising core production. Policy support for renewable deployment and grid integration will influence pace of expansion, and Coal India will assess opportunities that align with operational priorities.

The addition of 100 Megawatt capacity is expected to demonstrate feasibility of decentralised generation for industrial users and may encourage similar investments by other state owned enterprises. Coal India plans to monitor performance metrics and grid interaction to refine future deployments and to achieve greater operational resilience.
