CIL reports 528 mt of coal supplies to domestic power utilities

Coal India Limited (CIL) announced that it had supplied an all-time high of 528 million tonnes (mt) of coal to the country's power utilities by the end of the current fiscal year (FY) on March 24, 2022.

It is 98.5% of the Ministry of Power and Central Electricity Authority's projected demand of 535 mt.

As per the supply numbers, CIL is focused on achieving its despatch promise to the country's power facilities.

According to the present pattern of coal stock accumulation, CIL would start FY2023 with over 60 mt of coal at its pitheads. By the end of the year, domestic coal stockpiles at power plants are estimated to reach roughly 25 mt, with CIL supplies accounting for the majority of that.

An additional 4.5 mt would be available at goods sheds, washeries and ports. As of March 24, 2022, indigenous coal stock at power-houses monitored by Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA) stood at 23.7 mt.

CIL understands the need of addressing rising coal demand in the power industry since generation would grow as the summer starts.

CIL is prepared to satisfy summer demand by having sufficient coal in the system and increasing production.

The company offered an overall additional 11.2 mt of coal in two rounds as its basis, to increase coal stocks at the generating units when an unprecedented spike in power generation was seen in September 2021. The offer was extended to 12 central and state gencos from CIL's highly stocked mines via road-cum-rail mode.

To date, the year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth of CIL was 53%, including 35 mt of coal lifted via a special forward e-auction window.
