ABB Launches Proteus PV and BESS Portfolio

ABB has launched its Proteus PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS) portfolio to support the growing need for efficient power conversion in utility-scale renewable energy projects. The portfolio is aimed at utilities, power producers and renewable energy developers across global markets.

The company will present its new Proteus solar inverter at Intersolar 2026, scheduled from 22 to 25 June in Munich, Germany.

Daniel Gerber, Business Line Manager, Renewable Power, ABB, said the global energy transition requires proven, scalable and reliable power conversion solutions. He added that ABB, with over 120 GW of installed power conversion capacity, combines PV, BESS and control systems technologies with its global engineering, manufacturing and service capabilities.

According to ABB, solar PV continues to play an important role in supporting net-zero goals, industrial electrification and the wider energy transition. The growth of utility-scale solar projects in markets such as China, India and the USA is increasing demand for reliable, high-efficiency power conversion and grid integration systems.

ABB said the Proteus portfolio includes inverters, stations and control systems offering efficiency of up to 99.45 per cent. The solutions also deliver ultra-clean power output with THDi below 0.7 per cent, helping reduce equipment stress and extend system life.

The portfolio features advanced hybrid liquid and air cooling for long-term operational reliability. Its compact system architecture is designed to reduce installation complexity, transport costs and on-site assembly requirements. The new Proteus inverter also includes optimised airflow management and enhanced build quality to support reliability across different operating environments.

For energy storage applications, ABB’s Proteus BESS solutions include bi-directional converter stations and advanced control systems. The solutions offer features such as grid-forming and black-start operation, along with a battery-agnostic design and ultra-low harmonic distortion for utility-scale BESS projects.

ABB said it operates in more than 70 countries and supports utilities, EPCs and developers across major regions. The Proteus portfolio has been designed for a 30-year service life and is supported by lifecycle services for long-term reliability and operational availability.
