Aditya Birla Secures MUFG Loan For Sprng Energy Purchase

Aditya Birla Renewables has secured a US dollar (USD) 1.6 bn loan from MUFG to fund its acquisition of Solenergi Power, which includes the Sprng Energy group of companies from Shell plc. The financing package, also reported in euros at euro (EUR) 1.37 bn, will underpin the purchase and associated transaction costs. The company announced the arrangement as part of a strategy to scale its renewable energy operations. The lender was Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, commonly known as MUFG.

The loan agreement with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group provides long-term debt to bridge the acquisition, enabling Aditya Birla Renewables to integrate Sprng Energy's assets into its portfolio. The Sprng Energy group operates utility-scale projects across India and the transaction is expected to increase Aditya Birla Renewables' capacity and market presence. The deal reflects continued consolidation in the renewable energy sector as firms seek to secure project pipelines.

Aditya Birla Renewables is part of the larger Aditya Birla Group and focuses on developing, owning and operating renewable power projects. Solenergi Power and Sprng Energy bring a mix of solar and wind assets that will complement Aditya Birla Renewables' existing holdings and development pipeline. The acquisition financing structure is designed to align project cash flows with debt servicing over time. The structure aims to match asset revenues with repayment schedules.

Industry observers noted that such transactions are increasingly financed through large syndicated loans by international banks, underscoring investor confidence in India's energy transition. Aditya Birla Renewables will proceed with regulatory clearances and integration plans while managing operational continuity across the acquired assets. Regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions remain to be satisfied before final completion. The loan marks a significant step in the company's expansion within the renewable sector.
