Andhra Pradesh Targets 160 GW Renewable Capacity

Andhra Pradesh aims to generate 160 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy, the state minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said, outlining an ambitious capacity target for the coming years. The announcement reflects a drive to diversify the energy mix and accelerate deployment of wind, solar and other clean technologies. Officials expect the programme to attract investment and create jobs while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The minister indicated that planning will focus on grid integration and supportive land and policy frameworks.

The government intends to coordinate with central authorities, industry and financial institutions to mobilise resources and technical expertise. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure to accommodate intermittent generation. The plan will also consider storage solutions and demand management to enhance system stability. Stakeholders will be consulted as projects advance from planning to commissioning.

Authorities anticipate that renewable generation at the proposed scale will contribute to state and national climate objectives and support long term energy security. The initiative is expected to complement existing capacity and encourage private sector participation through competitive procurement. Officials will promote sustainable site selection to balance energy development with agricultural and ecological concerns.

The minister said capacity targets will be pursued through a mix of utility scale projects and distributed generation, including rooftop systems and industrial captive plants. Financial instruments and viability gap funding may be explored to make projects bankable and affordable. Progress will be monitored against milestones and adjusted to align with technological advances and market conditions.

The state will pursue regulatory reforms and streamlined approvals to accelerate project timelines, including simplified land acquisition and environmental clearances. Capacity building and skilling programmes will be promoted to develop local supply chains and maintenance capabilities. Officials will issue periodic updates on progress to maintain transparency and investor confidence.
