GEON Commissions 2.88 GWh BESS at Khavda

"GEON, the future technologies division of Kabra Extrusiontechnik, has completed the integration and commissioning of a 2.88 GWh Battery Energy Storage System at Khavda in Gujarat within five months.

The project is among India’s largest utility-scale BESS deployments and is now fully commercially operational.

The installation is part of the expanding renewable energy infrastructure at Khavda, which is emerging as one of India’s key clean energy hubs. GEON’s scope covered system integration, execution, testing and commissioning.

The project also included the integration of Power Conditioning Systems, transformers and advanced Energy Management Systems.

Anand Kabra, Chairman and Managing Director, GEON – Green Energy ON, said the Khavda project marks how quickly energy storage infrastructure is scaling in India. He said battery storage is no longer only a supporting technology, but is becoming central to managing and delivering clean power at grid scale.

Saurabh Jain, CEO – Energy Storage, GEON, said the company delivered the 2.88 GWh BESS Khavda project as nodal agency, completing the full scope within five months. He said the achievement reflects strong planning, efficient execution and seamless coordination between engineering and on-site project teams.

Jain added that the milestone highlights GEON’s capability in executing large-scale energy storage projects with speed, precision and high quality standards. He said such infrastructure will be critical as India’s renewable capacity grows and needs to become reliable and dispatchable.

The project comes amid rising investments in battery storage across India, supported by the country’s renewable energy targets and the growing need for grid balancing solutions.

GEON’s long-term strategy includes domestic manufacturing of BESS, with plans underway for a gigafactory to support future demand and strengthen India’s energy storage ecosystem.

Founded in 2018, GEON works across e-mobility, energy storage and electronics. The company offers lithium-ion battery packs for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers and off-road vehicles. Its portfolio also includes BESS, inverter batteries, telecom backup, and commercial and industrial storage solutions."
