Gujarat Tops Wind Energy Charts With 16,086 MW

Gujarat has emerged as the national leader in wind energy with installed capacity of 16,086 megawatt (MW) as of 30 June 2026, according to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The figure places the state at the top of the country's wind power charts and reflects several years of policy focus and infrastructure development. Officials have attributed the rise to targeted schemes and regulatory support that improved project viability and grid integration.

The state generated 33,706 million units (mn units) of wind power in the financial year 2025-26, accounting for nearly one third of India's wind energy output. After Gujarat's contribution, the country's overall installed wind capacity stood at 57,443 MW, while annual generation rose to 106 billion units (bn units) in FY 2025-26. These figures underscore the growing share of wind in the national renewable mix and the role of large states in meeting sectoral targets.

The Green Energy Corridor Scheme facilitated the creation of new transmission lines and substations, ensuring smoother evacuation of renewable power, and waivers on inter-state transmission system charges incentivised investment. The National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023 has helped modernise existing wind infrastructure and extend asset life, enabling higher output from established sites. Taken together, these measures reduced bottlenecks and improved the economics of wind projects.

Complementary reforms such as the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023 and the Viability Gap Funding Scheme for offshore wind projects have opened new avenues for future expansion, while state emphasis on innovation and investor friendly policies has created an ecosystem for renewable energy development. Gujarat's progress is presented as a contribution to India's 2030 objectives, which include achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity and lowering carbon emissions intensity. Analysts and policymakers will monitor how further transmission upgrades and repowering accelerate capacity additions.
