India to receive largest green ammonia plant from Greenko Group

The green ammonia plant in Una, Himachal Pradesh, will receive 28 units of 5 MW alkaline electrolysers from Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, a manufacturer of alkaline electrolysers based in Belgium. The 300 mt/day plant, which is being developed by Greenko Zeroc, a division of Greenko Group, and John Cockerill, will be the biggest green ammonia plant ever built in India, according to the official press release.

“The 28 units of 5 MW electrolyser will be installed at the Una site and will enable hydrogen production capacity of 140 MW of high pressure alkaline electrolysers. The electrolysers are due to be delivered in March 2024 and the plant is set to be commissioned by June 2024,” it added.

The purchase of the electrolyser is made in accordance with the terms of the strategic partnership agreement that Greenko and John Cockerill signed in March 2022 to collaborate on initiatives that will advance the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in the Indian subcontinent.

According to the press release, John Cockerill and Greenko are also collaborating to build a 2 GW per year electrolyser manufacturing facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India, as part of this agreement.

“This agreement is the latest examples of our tangible efforts to accelerate India’s green hydrogen ambitions as part of a wider program that will see India run the world’s largest energy transition programme,” said Anil Chalamalasetty, CEO and MD, Greenko. The goal of the company, according to Francois Michel, CEO of John Cockerill, is to assist partners in deploying extensive technological solutions to decarbonize the economy, particularly through green hydrogen.
