India's renewable capacity hits 203 GW, solar grows 28%: MNRE

India’s renewable energy capacity increased by 24.2 GW, or 13.5 per cent, reaching a total of 203.18 GW in October 2024, according to the latest data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This growth, from 178.98 GW in October 2023, highlights India’s dedication to clean energy and aligns with the ‘Panchamrit’ goals outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The growth in renewable energy is mainly driven by solar, which saw an increase of 20.1 GW, reflecting a 27.9 per cent rise from 72.02 GW in October 2023 to 92.12 GW in 2024. The total solar capacity, including projects under implementation and those tendered, now stands at 250.57 GW, up from 166.49 GW the previous year. Wind energy also grew, with its installed capacity rising by 7.8 per cent, from 44.29 GW to 47.72 GW. The wind energy pipeline now holds a total of 72.35 GW in projects.

From April to October 2024, 12.6 GW of renewable capacity was added, including 1.72 GW in October alone. By October 2024, renewable projects under implementation had reached 143.94 GW, and 89.69 GW were tendered, showing strong progress toward India’s clean energy targets. Large hydro projects contributed 46.93 GW, while nuclear power added 8.18 GW to the renewable portfolio, strengthening India’s energy mix.

Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, stated on X that solar capacity had surged by an impressive 28 per cent over the past year, and wind energy had grown by nearly 8 per cent. He emphasised that these significant increases demonstrate India’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy.
