More than 5.06 million (mn) households have installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said. The figure follows 0.794 mn installations over the previous decade and reflects rapid recent uptake. The ministry added the scheme is adding nearly 0.1 mn beneficiary households every six days. With a total outlay of Rs 750.21 billion (bn) the scheme has become the world’s largest rooftop solar programme and installations have more than trebled in nine months. Daily installations rose from 5,038 to 16,328 between October 2025 and July 2026, while July alone recorded 0.506 mn installations. The government has disbursed Rs 280.24 bn in subsidies via Direct Benefit Transfer. Nearly 1.9 mn households now pay zero electricity bills, and about 1.2 mn households earned a combined Rs 4.21 bn by selling surplus power in FY 2024-25, averaging about Rs 3,500 extra per household. The Utility Led Aggregation Model has delivered 0.16 mn installations for PMAY, BPL and SC/ST households in four states and is approved for 12 states. Concessional loans at 5.75 per cent have been sanctioned to 2.187 mn applicants, financing 1.75 mn installations. The programme supports a nationwide vendor base of over 34,000 registered firms, including 29,469 active vendors, and has trained 0.232 mn people in the value chain. It has commissioned 14,800 megawatt (MW) of rooftop capacity and runs on a fully digital platform with API links to more than 80 DISCOMs, digital net metering and paperless loan processing. Deemed approvals and feasibility waivers apply to systems up to 10 kilowatt (kW) and 32 States and Union Territories have waived application and net metering charges. Central government buildings have been solarised with 25,255 of 41,542 feasible buildings delivering 872 MW and states have solarised 81,329 buildings with 1,450 MW, bringing the total to 106,000 government buildings. The Centre has released Rs 38.08 bn in incentives to DISCOMs and about Rs 1.04 bn to urban local bodies, and nearly 23,000 third party quality inspections have been conducted.
