RVUNL To Bring 1,000 MWh Battery Storage Online By September

Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd will bring 1,000 megawatt-hour (MWh) of its planned 6,000 MWh battery energy storage capacity online by September, with the remaining capacity expected to be completed by September 2027. The move is intended to strengthen the state renewable power ecosystem and reduce curtailment of surplus solar generation. The first tranche will focus on integrating variable renewable output into the grid.

Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Ltd has proposed an additional 6,000 MWh of storage paired with 2,450 megawatt (MW) of solar capacity at the under construction Pugal Solar Park, although tendering has yet to begin pending approval from the regulatory commission. The pairing is designed to co?locate storage with generation to maximise utilisation. Project development timelines will depend on regulatory clearances and procurement schedules.

The Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission has notified Battery Energy Storage System regulations to provide a framework for planning, procurement, ownership and operation of storage assets across the power sector. Under the rules, distribution companies and the State Transmission Utility will periodically assess storage needs and identify substations suitable for battery deployment. The regulations permit multiple ownership models including utility owned, developer owned and consumer owned systems.

Battery systems are expected to store excess daytime solar power and release energy during the evening demand peak, helping to improve grid efficiency and to stabilise voltage and frequency. Competitive bidding will be required for large utility scale projects to ensure cost competitiveness and transparency. Deployment is expected to reduce renewable energy wastage and to defer some conventional capacity investment.

When complete, the combined plans would add around 12,000 MWh of storage across the state, enhancing grid reliability and enabling higher renewable penetration. Officials say the developments aim to reduce curtailment losses and to optimise use of solar resource at lower overall system cost. The staggered rollout through to September 2027 is intended to align storage build out with evolving grid requirements.
