Uttar Pradesh Sets Record With 71,888 Rooftop Solar Installations

Uttar Pradesh set a national record in June 2026 by installing 71,888 residential rooftop solar plants under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The achievement, carried out under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, represented the highest monthly number of residential rooftop solar installations by any state. The performance was the state's best ever monthly outcome in the sector.

To date the state has received 1,089,716 applications and completed installation of 636,745 residential rooftop solar plants. For several consecutive months Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest monthly installations nationally and has been described as the fastest growing state in India's residential rooftop solar sector. The trend has driven a rapid expansion of household participation in rooftop systems.

More than 2,148 megawatt (MW) of capacity has been installed in the state so far and subsidies exceeding Rs 55 billion (Rs 55 bn) have been transferred directly to consumers. The rollout has supported a supply chain of more than 7,000 companies and vendors and has created in excess of 80,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Officials noted the cumulative progress reflected programmes to scale deployment and streamline approvals.

Residential rooftop solar systems in the state are generating approximately 9.6 million (9.6 mn) units of free electricity per day, with an estimated value of more than Rs 60 million (Rs 60 mn) per day. The sector is producing a daily business turnover of more than Rs 400 million (Rs 400 mn) while saving more than 9,000 acres of land compared with land-based large projects. Stakeholders have highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of distributed generation.

Considering current trends the state expected to surpass Maharashtra in total residential rooftop solar installations by the end of July 2026 and subsequently targets Gujarat as the next milestone to become the country's leading state on cumulative numbers. The success has been attributed to coordinated efforts by aware consumers, solar vendors, UPNEDA, banking institutions, DISCOMs and other stakeholders. The rapid expansion is advancing clean energy adoption and energy self-reliance across Uttar Pradesh.
