Property tax leviable for paid parking in Ahmedabad

The civic body announced that malls and commercial complexes in the city, which charge visitors parking fees, will now be required to pay property tax on dedicated parking space, as per the newly declared Parking Area Policy.

According to the policy, property tax will not be imposed on spaces in residential properties or commercial properties where parking is offered for free. Jainik Vakil, chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation?s revenue committee, explained that residential areas like bungalows or tenements, where temporary sheds or sunshades have been erected for parking (even if they might be illegal), will not be subjected to property tax.

Vakil also clarified a technical aspect of the policy, stating that the total runway space, which refers to the area designated for the movement of vehicles in parking spaces and access ramps in basements, will be exempt from the tax. He mentioned that they estimated the total runway space to constitute approximately 35% of the overall dedicated parking space.
