VMRDA developed most layouts in 2022

In 2022, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) have created 90 layouts, including YSR Jagananna Colonies and MIG (middle income group) layouts. This was significantly higher than the layouts created by the VMRDA over its 60-year history.

In 2022, the VMRDA developed 81 layouts spread across approximately 5,000 acres under the Jagananna Colonies alone, spending approximately 1.5 billion on basic infrastructure. Another 500 million will be spent by the VMRDA on advanced infrastructure in these one-cent layouts.

Dr. A Mallikarjuna, Visakhapatnam district collector and VMRDA metropolitan commissioner, stated that the 81 Jagananna layouts have provided housing for nearly 1.47 lakh homeless people in the district.

“The VMRDA has taken up development of 9 MIG layouts in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Anakapalli districts. About 3,370 plots will be on offer in these 9 layouts spread in 450 acres.

In total, the VMRDA's 90 layouts designed and implemented in 2022 are expected to house nearly 1.5 lakh people. The VMRDA has already spent Rs. 1.5 billion on the Jagananna Colonies project. Another 500 million will be spent on advanced infrastructure such as roads and parks.

The VMRDA's engineering, planning, estate, and other wings worked around the clock to complete the Jagananna Colonies. On the housing front, the VMRDA staff and officials had a busy year. "The VMRDA has succeeded in meeting the government's goals and ambitions to provide housing for the poor," Mallikarjuna said.

India Sees 1 per cent Drop in Power Sector CO₂ Emissions

India’s carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector fell by 1 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2025, marking only the second decline in nearly 50 years, according to a research report. The reduction was largely driven by record clean-energy capacity additions and lower electricity demand due to unusually mild weather, the analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) for Carbon Brief found. The Helsinki-based think tank attributed 65 per cent of the decline in fossil-fuel generation to slower demand growth, 20 per cent to faster expansion of clean energy, and..
