ACME Secures Major Green Ammonia And Methanol Offtakes With Japan

ACME Cleantech Solutions Private Limited (ACME Group) has secured long-term offtake agreements with Japanese partners for green ammonia and green methanol at a ceremony in New Delhi under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). The agreements were signed in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and representatives from the Government of Japan, reflecting strengthened India–Japan cooperation in clean energy.

The NGHM, approved in January 2023, carries an outlay of Rs 197.44 bn and aims to position India as a global hub for production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme, implemented through the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), provides financial support for production via a transparent bidding process and has awarded ACME a production capacity of 370,000 tonne (t) per annum.

Under the agreements ACME will supply 405,000 t per annum of green ammonia to IHI Corporation, supported by Japan’s Contract for Difference scheme administered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) which provides price support to off-takers to secure long-term commercial viability. ACME has also entered a 10-year contract with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company for 100,000 t per annum of green methanol from its Paradip facility, designed to meet European Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin requirements and International Maritime Organization standards for cleaner marine fuels.

Indian officials described the deals as delivering three key outcomes for the Mission: creation of a market linkage with Japan for green ammonia and methanol, demonstration of commercial maturity in the green hydrogen sector, and establishment of international value chains. Japanese representatives characterised the agreements as a flagship result of deepening bilateral cooperation on clean energy and energy security.

The transactions represent one of the largest offtake commitments from India to Japan to date and are expected to reinforce long-term demand for capacities developed under the SIGHT Programme. The partnerships were presented as advancing global decarbonisation goals while opening new markets for Indian green fuels and attracting further investment into the domestic green hydrogen ecosystem.
