Assam CM Orders Road Repairs to Boost Tourism and Economy with Bhutan

In a move to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth between Assam and Bhutan, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed officials to prioritize the maintenance and repair of roads linking the two states.

Sarma, who also holds the Public Works Department (PWD) portfolio, reviewed various ongoing and proposed road projects connecting Assam and Bhutan during a meeting with senior department officials.

"To assess the condition of highways and roads connecting Assam and Bhutan, Chief Minister Dr. @himantabiswa held a meeting with PWD officials and other concerned officials," the Chief Minister's Office stated in a social media post.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining and upgrading the road infrastructure to facilitate seamless transportation and promote tourism and economic activities between the two regions.

This initiative comes on the heels of the recent visit by Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk to Assam, marking the first time the monarch has traveled to the state. During his three-day tour, which began on November 3, the King visited several prominent sites across Assam.

The 43-year-old King was accompanied by the Royal Bhutan Ambassador Major General Vetsop Namgyel and a delegation of senior members of the royal office.

The Chief Minister's directive highlights the significance of strengthening the Assam-Bhutan relationship through improved infrastructure and enhanced connectivity, paving the way for increased trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two neighboring states.
