BEML Launches 35-Tonne Electric Dump Truck for Green Mining

BEML Limited (BEML) has unveiled India’s first indigenously developed 35 tonne (35 t) electric dump truck aimed at enabling zero-emission, high-productivity mining operations. The launch announced in Bengaluru marks a milestone in domestic heavy equipment manufacturing and advances the development of electric solutions tailored to demanding mine environments. BEML presented the vehicle as engineered for robustness and adaptability to varied site conditions while prioritising operational continuity. The development included iterative testing to refine durability and systems integration.

The new platform features a high-efficiency electric drivetrain with reported drivetrain efficiency of 85–90 per cent and claims of up to 70 per cent energy savings compared with conventional diesel models. The design also targets reduced operating and maintenance costs through simplified powertrain architecture and lower thermal load on components. Fast-charging capability has been incorporated to support near-continuous operations and minimise downtime during shift changes. Onboard diagnostics and telematics functions are intended to aid preventive maintenance and fleet management.

By replacing diesel-powered haulage with electric alternatives, operators can lower direct carbon emissions at site and reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas intensity associated with material movement. The electric architecture is intended to improve productivity metrics through consistent torque delivery and reduced refuelling interruptions, while lifecycle cost assessments are projected to favour electric platforms as energy prices and maintenance regimes evolve. The solution aligns with national decarbonisation objectives and broader clean energy initiatives. Operators can benefit from lower noise levels and improved cabin ergonomics that support longer shifts.

The indigenously designed truck strengthens domestic manufacturing capabilities and positions BEML to compete in next-generation mining equipment markets. The company indicated that the platform will support clients seeking to transition to eco-friendly mining technologies and to meet regulatory and stakeholder expectations on emissions. Industry adoption timelines will depend on operator evaluations, infrastructure readiness and total cost comparisons with legacy fleets. Rollout plans will align with customer feedback cycles and infrastructure build-out for charging networks.
