India, Nepal Ink Pact to Deepen Agricultural Ties

India and Nepal have signed an agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration in the agriculture sector and expanding bilateral ties. The agreement was signed in Kathmandu by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Nepal’s Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ram Nath Adhikari.

According to Chouhan, the partnership will focus on enhancing crop productivity, improving post-harvest management, modernising agri-marketing systems, and promoting climate-resilient, sustainable farming practices. “This agreement will further deepen the partnership between our two nations,” he said in a post on social media.

The agreement covers a broad range of areas including agricultural science and technology, crop and horticulture production, trade and marketing, plant protection, integrated farming systems, and micro-irrigation, according to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Nepal.

Both ministers also reviewed progress on existing bilateral initiatives and discussed potential areas for expanded collaboration in agriculture and allied sectors.

Later, Chouhan met with Nepal’s Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, where he conveyed greetings from India’s leadership and emphasised the importance of working together on agricultural modernisation, food security, and economic development. He also highlighted the shared cultural and historical ties between the two countries.

Chouhan is in Nepal to participate in the 3rd BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministerial Meeting. Reflecting on the event, he said it had become a key platform in advancing food security, agricultural growth, and farmer welfare across the region.
