Nvidia Plans Rs Three Billion Stake In SB Energy Ohio Campus

Nvidia is reportedly in talks to invest Rs three billion (bn) in SB Energy, a SoftBank Group unit developing a major Ohio data centre campus for OpenAI, with discussions said to include about Rs 100 bn in credit support. The proposal would bind a chipmaker, an AI developer and an infrastructure firm in a single project and underscores the rising capital demands of large scale AI systems. Analysts say the move reflects evolving commercial links between chip supply and physical compute capacity.

Under the terms discussed, Nvidia would commit roughly Rs one point five bn at signing and another Rs one point five bn through SB Energy's planned initial public offering, which is expected to seek at least Rs five bn. SB Energy, founded in 2019, specialises in large power and data centre developments and is positioning the Ohio campus as a strategic asset. OpenAI is negotiating for a full site lease to secure long term access to computing resources.

The planned campus could reach 10 gigawatts of capacity, making it among the largest announced data centre projects and reducing reliance on external providers. Nvidia is moving beyond chip sales toward financing and other supports that encourage deployment of its processors. The company has sought partners and financing structures to channel private capital into AI infrastructure while spreading risk.

Reports state that Nvidia reduced the size of an earlier guarantee, shifting from about Rs 250 bn to an initial backing below Rs 120 bn after investor concerns. The firm has also engaged several financial institutions on compute financing platforms intended to attract third party capital and limit single party exposure. If realised, the Ohio project will test how technology firms, financiers and developers share the costs and risks of next generation AI computing.
