Tata Motors To Supply 100 Magna EV Coaches To GEMS

Tata Motors has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Energy Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd (GEMS), the electric mobility arm of Universal Bus Services (UBS), to supply 100 all-electric Magna EV intercity coaches. The agreement was signed during Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 in Chennai, where Tata Motors also showcased its commercial passenger vehicle range, including the Magna EV and the LPO 1822 model.
GEMS was founded as part of UBS’s shift toward clean mobility and focuses on deploying electric buses along with supporting charging infrastructure. UBS, a reputable intercity operator in South India, is known for its reliable, premium services.
The MoU signing was attended by Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu, alongside state government officials and representatives from the All Omni Bus Owners Association (AOBOA). Dr. Rajaa remarked that the collaboration is in line with Tamil Nadu’s commitment to automotive innovation and sustainable public transport.
Sunil Kumar Ravindran, Managing Partner at UBS and Director at GEMS, expressed confidence in Tata Motors’ technology, noting the Magna EV’s potential to enhance passenger comfort, reduce operating costs, and eliminate tailpipe emissions. He highlighted that these benefits align with UBS’s vision of transitioning to electric mobility for long-haul routes.
Anand S, Vice President and Head of Commercial Passenger Vehicles at Tata Motors, described the MoU as a major step forward in electrifying India’s intercity transport. He added that the Magna EV was designed using customer insights and extensive field trials, with a focus on safety, performance, and efficiency.
The Magna EV is a 44-seater electric coach with a claimed single-charge range of up to 300 kilometres. It features ergonomic seating, Electronic Braking System (EBS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), aiming to ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience.
Tata Motors currently leads India’s electric bus market with models such as the Starbus EV and Ultra EV for city use, and the Magna EV for intercity travel. Over 3,600 Tata electric buses are in operation across 11 Indian cities, collectively having covered more than 340 million kilometres with reported uptime exceeding 95 per cent. All vehicles are equipped with Fleet Edge, Tata’s connected vehicle platform for real-time tracking, diagnostics, and fleet management.
