UK Housebuilding Boom Opens Doors for Skilled Indian Workers

The UK’s ambitious plan to build 1.3 million homes by 2029–2030, announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, is creating significant opportunities for skilled Indian construction workers, according to Yash Dubal, Director of A Y & J Solicitors, a London-based immigration consultancy.
While £600 million has been earmarked to train 60,000 British workers, Dubal points out that this won’t be enough to meet demand, given the current 16% labour shortfall in the construction sector — the second-most affected industry in the UK.
The Construction Skills Network (CSN) estimates that 225,000 new workers will be required by 2027, with particular demand for bricklayers, civil engineers, and other key trades. To bridge this gap, UK construction firms are expected to look overseas, creating a pathway for Indian professionals via the Skilled Worker visa.
Eligible roles include bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers, roofers, stonemasons, and more. While the typical salary threshold for the visa is £38,700, critical shortage roles can qualify with a reduced threshold of £30,960, making the UK job market more accessible.
“India’s skilled tradespeople are well-positioned to meet the UK’s construction needs,” said Dubal. “This is a prime moment for Indian professionals to align their skills with visa requirements and build strong careers in the UK.
