voestalpine orders four Liebherr electric cranes

voestalpine has selected four Liebherr LH 150 T Gantry Industry E electric material handlers for its Linz site in Austria. The machines will support scrap handling operations as the steel and technology group advances its greentec steel programme.

The company is preparing to start electric arc furnace operations at Linz and Donawitz from 2027. At Linz, the Liebherr machines will help ensure a reliable supply of scrap to the new furnace, which will be powered by green electricity. Two machines have already entered service, while the remaining two are scheduled for commissioning later this year.

The LH 150 T Gantry Industry E machines will unload incoming rail wagons carrying steel scrap and load scrap hoppers that feed the electric arc furnace. This will help maintain a continuous flow of material for lower-carbon steel production.

Powered by a 440 kW electric motor, the machines combine high productivity with quiet and zero-emission operation. A 16-metre straight boom and angled stick provide a reach of up to 32 metres, marking a first for a Liebherr material handling machine.

Each machine has an operating mass of 210 tonnes and a customised rail-mounted gantry undercarriage, allowing rail wagons to pass beneath during loading and unloading. Liebherr’s energy recovery system and fibre-optic cable integration further improve efficiency, reliability and handling performance.

The delivery also marks a milestone in Liebherr’s long-standing partnership with voestalpine. The final unit scheduled for Linz will be the 100th Liebherr machine supplied to the company.
