BorgWarner Wins China Transfer Case Order for New SUV

BorgWarner has secured an order to supply its torque-on-demand transfer case with mechanical lock for a newly developed full-size SUV from a Chinese original equipment manufacturer.

Production of the vehicle is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Mlock torque-on-demand system combines automatic four-wheel drive torque distribution with mechanical locking modes. BorgWarner said the technology is designed to balance on-road efficiency with off-road capability across different driving conditions.

Unlike traditional part-time four-wheel drive systems that require drivers to manually select operating modes, the Mlock TOD system enables more responsive torque distribution and improved ease of operation.

The system is expected to support vehicle handling, traction and safety while allowing the SUV to operate across both urban roads and more demanding off-road environments.

Henk Vanthournout, Vice President, BorgWarner, and President and General Manager, Drivetrain and Morse Systems, said the latest order extends the company’s 20-year relationship with the customer.

He added that the system combines torque-on-demand four-wheel drive with mechanical lock functions to address varied driving conditions and improve off-road performance.

BorgWarner said the transfer case is based on a proven product design and can be adapted for different vehicle platforms.

The company will support the programme through its local engineering and manufacturing capabilities in China as it continues to expand its four-wheel drive business in the market.
