Gurgaon To Get Three Model Roads After Rs 500 mn Revamp

Come March 31, three major stretches in Gurgaon will be transformed into model roads under a nearly Rs 500 million (mn) programme by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The Phase I corridors are MG Road from IFFCO Chowk to the start of Golf Course Road, Hamilton Court Road and Vyapar Kendra Road, selected for high visibility and traffic. The authority has finalised allocations of Rs 200 mn each for Hamilton Court and Vyapar Kendra and Rs 100 mn for the MG Road stretch.

The project will deliver refreshed lane markings, clearly defined zebra crossings with pedestrian signals and optimised traffic lights. It will ensure fully operational service roads and removal of encroachments and illegal parking, alongside installation of digital signages, bollards, road studs and improved street lighting. Public announcement systems will be added and enforcement will shift to a fully camera based system with e challans issued through CCTV surveillance to reduce corruption risks and improve traffic flow.

Officials said major development works were already under way and that renovation activity initiated in February 2024 had remained unfinished, exacerbating congestion in parts of the city. Residents reported that earlier excavation and reconstruction often left footpaths inaccessible for elderly users, prompting calls for better execution. GMDA officials indicated the model roads are intended to serve as benchmarks for lane discipline, pedestrian safety and technology driven enforcement to improve commuter behaviour.

The authority pointed to the April inauguration of a Complete Streets initiative in Udyog Vihar as a model, where a two point four kilometre stretch with five metre pavements and a 30 metre width provided shaded footpaths and a dedicated cycle track. That scheme cost around Rs 230 mn and was funded by the GMDA, the state discom and the Raahgiri Foundation. Officials said a Phase II rollout is planned for additional corridors.
