Prime Minister Inaugurates Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu

The Prime Minister (PM) inaugurated Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, Assam. The PM described the bridge as a vital infrastructure project for Guwahati and surrounding areas. The ceremony was reported by the Press Information Bureau. Senior officials present emphasised anticipated reductions in travel time and the strategic value of a reliable river crossing for emergency services and commerce.

He said connectivity, comfort and commerce would be significantly enhanced and that the structure would enable devotees to reach the Kamakhya Temple with greater ease. Officials noted that the bridge will improve regional links and is expected to support daily travel and the movement of goods. Local authorities anticipate reduced congestion on existing crossings. Stakeholders also highlighted potential gains for small traders and service providers who rely on timely supply chains.

The Setu will provide a new corridor across the river, facilitating commuter journeys and strengthening supply chains that serve urban and peri-urban markets. Planners said the link is intended to integrate transport networks and to encourage investment in adjacent neighbourhoods. The project was presented as part of a wider effort to modernise transport infrastructure in the region. Analysts suggested that improved connectivity could contribute to balanced urban development across the metropolitan area.

The Press Information Bureau release stated that the inauguration formed one element of the central government's emphasis on connecting cities and towns through strategic works. Officials said the bridge is expected to deliver long-term benefits for residents, businesses and pilgrims. Observers noted that improved access could support tourism and local commerce over the coming years. The department indicated that such projects are being prioritised to foster inclusive growth and to enhance regional resilience.
