Service road collapses at Santhekatte underpass construction site

A portion of the service road at Santhekatte underpass construction area on the Udupi-Mangaluru stretch of National Highway 66, caved in leading to concern from the residents over access and also possible damage to their houses.

Over saturation of the soil due to continuous rains from the last one week was said to be the likely the cause of the incident. A week back, a portion of the road on the same stretch had a similar collapse.

The collapse of the service road portion also caused damage to the retaining wall of the underpass. Public blamed the NHAI's concessionaire for executing work at a snail's pace from the beginning of the year on the project. As the service road has been damaged extensively, vehicles movement on that road has been restricted.

While the city received no rain on Monday, the three coastal districts had light to moderate rains in scattered locations. The sun had come out for the majority of the day, and the temperatures had risen.

The state's maximum rainfall was reported at Manipura and Udyavara, both in Udupi Taluk, with 51mm and 49mm, respectively. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi, three coastal districts.

The IMD issued a thunderstorm warning with lightning along with gusty gusts exceeding 40-45 Kmph at isolated locations over all districts of Coastal Karnataka until July 14. The department also predicted heavy rain in the range of 64mm to 115mm at isolated locations across all Coastal Karnataka districts, adding that thunderstorms with lightning are likely to occur at isolated locations across all coastal districts, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until July 14.

The collapse of the service road at the Santhekatte underpass construction location on the Udupi-Mangaluru stretch of National Highway 66 not only destroyed the underpass's retaining wall, but also puts the houses close in danger.
