NDMC to redevelop areas around old Delhi railway station

To construct public facilities and redevelop the areas near old Delhi railway station, North Delhi Municipal Corporation proposes to use 10,000 sq yards of land given on lease to three clubs — Radhe Mohan Club, Young Men’s Tennis Club and Union Club.

Recently, it took over ownership of these sites. The clubs were provided with the properties on annual licensing fees before Independence. They require these properties for conducting remunerative and other development works. They revoked the licence deed and asked them to give back ownership of the land sometime back.

When no reply was received, the land and estate department filed a petition with the estate officer for getting the lands vacated and the order was given in favour of the north corporation. An order was declared regarding this in September, while ownership was taken in the beginning of November. The licensee took the matter to the district court, but no stay was declared. It took them about two years to get the issue settled.

The corporation alleged there was a fourth club there, and proceedings were on to take its ownership. There are no plans to continue with the clubs or allow any recreational facilities in them. They require the land for different purposes.

The Public Works Department has asked them for land to widen the roads near Old Delhi Railway Station. They additionally require space to form proper parking facilities to decrease congestion.

Once they receive all plots, a decision will be taken for their utilisation. In the planned budget estimates for FY 2022-23, the north corporation commissioner had mentioned the market value of these club sites was approximately Rs 200 crore. They have places in Karol Bagh and SP Mukherjee Market as well, but these clubs were the notable ones.
