Amazon India has expanded operations on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), marking a significant increase in its use of rail logistics since 2019. The company’s rail network has grown from a single train in 2019 to more than 140 trains operating across 130 intercity routes and connecting over 100 destination cities. The move forms part of wider efforts to boost multimodality across its transportation network and to leverage rail as an economical, reliable and sustainable mode of transportation. Kishore Lanka, Director-Operations at Amazon India, said that expanding use of dedicated freight infrastructure increases multimodality, improves operational efficiency and helps meet the evolving needs of customers across India. He noted that the company intends to deepen collaboration with Indian Railways and the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to strengthen its logistics network. The statement emphasised rail’s cost and sustainability advantages for long-distance freight movement. The WDFC spans approximately 1,504 kilometres from New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) near Mumbai and is designed to decongest the existing rail network. The Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) aim to increase the average speed of freight trains, enable operation of heavy-haul trains and connect ports and industrial areas to speed up freight movement. These measures are intended to reduce the overall cost of logistics and improve throughput on key corridors. Manoj Singh, Member (Operations and Business Development) at the Railway Board, said that the corridor offers a greener, faster and more reliable mode of transportation, enabling cargo to travel overnight and reach destinations the next day. He added that the service can move 350-400 t within 24 hours, creating an economical and sustainable freight option and opening opportunities for smaller businesses to access the DFC network.
