The Borivali?Virar fifth and sixth lines project has recorded 30 per cent physical progress, MRVC announced as it advanced work on capacity augmentation along the Western Railway suburban corridor. The scheme forms part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project?IIIA (MUTP?IIIA) and focuses on a stretch that serves a high density of daily commuters. MRVC said the programme is being pursued to relieve congestion and to improve the predictability of local train operations for passengers. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 2,184 crore, which equates to Rs 21.84 bn after conversion into larger units, and covers land acquisition, bridge construction, platform extensions and foot overbridge works. These elements are intended to support the commissioning of additional lines and associated civil infrastructure necessary for separating fast and slow services. The civil works include earthworks, retaining structures and station modifications designed to accommodate increased train movements. By creating dedicated corridors for different service types, the upgrade aims to increase line capacity and to streamline suburban operations, enabling tighter scheduling and reducing platform crowding at key stations. The addition of the fifth and sixth lines will allow Western Railway to operate services with clearer segregation between long distance and suburban traffic, supporting more reliable peak period performance. Works on signalling interfaces and passenger access points have been prioritised to maintain continuity of daily services while construction proceeds. MRVC has set a target date of 2029 for completion of the major capacity augmentation works and is coordinating with Western Railway and other stakeholders to adhere to the timeline. Progress has been described in physical percentages to reflect on?site activity and procurement milestones, with contractors mobilised across multiple packages. The agency has indicated that continued focus on land clearance and structural deliveries will be key to achieving commissioning within the stated timeframe.
