Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Metro Gets Central Approval

Central authorities have granted approval for the Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam metro rail project, marking a significant expansion of the city rapid transit network. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will be the implementing agency for the corridor, which links the international airport with the southern suburbs. The sanction follows submission of project proposals and formal clearances at the federal level. The decision clears statutory requirements and allows the agency to commence the project lifecycle.

The corridor is intended to integrate with the existing metro network and provide a direct public transport option between major transport hubs. Planning documents indicate alignment choices were prepared to serve densely populated areas and interchange nodes. CMRL has been tasked with detailed engineering, procurement and contract management for the scheme. Authorities have outlined that construction activity will proceed following finalisation of administrative and financial arrangements.

Preparatory steps will include tendering, site preparation and mobilisation of resources under CMRL supervision. Land acquisition and utility relocation are to be coordinated with local authorities to ensure continuity of work. The project will be sequenced to align with operational requirements of the existing network and minimise disruption to commuters. Work programmes will be detailed in tender documents and project schedules.

Officials said the corridor will strengthen connectivity, reduce travel time and support a modal shift to mass transit in the metropolitan area. The airport link will improve access for passengers and employees and ease pressure on road corridors. Stakeholders highlighted the role of the scheme in supporting sustainable urban mobility and long term growth of public transport ridership. CMRL will oversee monitoring and implementation as the project moves into execution.
