Chennai Metro Begins Trial Runs on Driverless Corridor

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced trial runs on a 10-kilometre section of Corridor four between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, marking a key milestone in the Phase two expansion of the city’s metro system.

The testing began on 28 April and involved driverless trains operated with drivers onboard for safety during initial phases. The 10-kilometre stretch is part of a larger 26.1-kilometre corridor extending from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass.

According to CMRL, the segment is linked to the Poonamallee Metro Depot, which will serve as the primary facility for all testing and commissioning operations. The route also includes the Mullai Thottam Metro Station and is undergoing progressive trial phases to validate safety and performance before public operations begin.

Managing Director of CMRL, M.A. Siddique, stated that the initiation of trials is a major achievement for the Phase two Project. He added that testing along the viaduct section reflects a focused effort to meet construction and commissioning deadlines.

The trials are part of CMRL’s broader goal to implement advanced metro systems and improve public transport efficiency in Chennai, including the deployment of driverless train technologies.
