Concord Wins NTPC Order For World’s Largest Hydrogen Locomotive

Concord Control Systems has secured an order from NTPC Limited to develop the world’s largest 3,100 HP hydrogen-fuelled locomotive propulsion system, marking a global first in high-horsepower hydrogen rail technology. The Rs 470 million order has been awarded to Concord’s wholly owned subsidiary, Advance Rail Controls  (ARCPL), in collaboration with Railway Engineering Works.

The project will convert an existing diesel locomotive into a 3,100 HP hydrogen-powered engine, the highest-ever horsepower conversion globally. Until now, hydrogen rail systems internationally have been limited to around 1,600 HP, positioning India at the forefront of heavy-duty hydrogen propulsion.

The initiative is a flagship green hydrogen project for NTPC and aligns with Indian Railways’ target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Unlike experimental prototypes, the propulsion system is being developed as a commercially deployable solution for freight-scale operations, aimed at demonstrating hydrogen’s real-world viability in heavy rail transport.

“At Concord, we are proud to pioneer the world’s first 3,100 HP hydrogen locomotive propulsion system for the Public Sector giant NTPC on this nationally significant green hydrogen initiative,” said Gaurav Lath, Joint Managing Director, Concord Control Systems Limited. “Hydrogen-powered locomotives represent a decisive step in creating future-ready, sustainable railways starting in India, aiming for the world.”

Nitin Jain, Joint Managing Director, Concord Control Systems Limited, added, “The development of a high-horsepower hydrogen and battery-powered locomotive underscores the strength of indigenous engineering and cross-sector collaboration. We are proud to work with NTPC to support India’s decarbonisation goals while setting new global benchmarks in sustainable rail technology.”

Commenting on the award, Dr Ritwick Ghosh of NTPC said, “This is a dream realised as a Mechanical Engineer and a passionate hydrogen enthusiast, building from a conceptual thought to a project award. I am now excited to see how we go from paper to track.”

The project supports India’s broader clean energy and decarbonisation agenda and positions the country as a global technology leader in zero-emission heavy rail, with potential future applications across international markets committed to net-zero transport.

Integrated Waterproofing Strategies

Waterproofing buildings used to be an annual pre-monsoon affair but the evolution of real-estate development has changed that approach. In new developments, developers are weaving waterproofing solutions into both the design and construction phases, an approach that Nikhil Madan, Managing Director, Mahima Group, says, “is all about ensuring lasting durability [of the building] and keeping lifecycle risks including water seepage and extensive maintenance to a minimum.”Watertight by designAluminium formwork systems aren’t commonly thought of as a waterproofing tool but at the Mahima Group,..
