Eastern Railway to Invest Rs 120 bn in Capacity Expansion

Eastern Railway is carrying out capacity expansion projects backed by an investment of Rupees (Rs) 120 bn in the region. The general manager, Gitika Pandey, told attendees at the CII Rail Synergy and Bengal MSME Vendor Connect Summit 2026 that the works will be implemented over four to five years. The investment is intended to create additional route capacity and improve the resilience of the network. The announcement follows ongoing efforts to modernise rail links and accommodate projected traffic growth.

The projects are designed to strengthen the movement of passengers and freight and to address rising demand across the Eastern Railway region. Work will focus on enhancing line capacity, signalling upgrades and other infrastructure interventions to reduce congestion and improve punctuality. Officials expect phased delivery to align with operational priorities and resource availability. The programme will involve phased upgrades coordinated with station works and network maintenance cycles.

Implementation is being planned in coordination with stakeholders to ensure minimal disruption to services and to optimise freight corridors. The authority noted that investment of this scale will also support ancillary maintenance and capacity management activities over the medium term. Project sequencing will be informed by traffic patterns and network bottlenecks identified through surveys and operational analysis. Data driven planning is intended to prioritise sections with acute constraints and to sequence interventions efficiently.

Funding allocation and detailed tendering will proceed under established procurement frameworks while monitoring continues to ensure compliance and value for money. The region's expanded capacity is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods and people and to contribute to regional economic activity. Officials said the measures would be coordinated with other national and state infrastructure priorities to maximise benefits. Progress will be reviewed periodically to align delivery timelines with demand and safety imperatives.
