Madurai Rail: 85% Electrification, Faster Tracks

The Madurai railway division stands out with remarkable advancements, marking substantial achievements in electrification and enhanced track operations. During the Independence Day celebrations, Divisional Railway Manager P Ananth unveiled these accomplishments, highlighting the division's dedication to modernising rail services.

Noteworthy accomplishments include the remarkable increase in sectional speeds on vital track stretches. The Tirumangalam – Vanchi Maniyachi – Tirunelveli track distance, covering 140 km, saw its speed elevated from 100 km h to 110 kmph in April. Similarly, the Tirunelveli – Tenkasi stretch of 70.2 km witnessed an upsurge from 70 kmph to 110 kmph. The Madurai – Andipatti – Theni section, spanning 74.78 km, observed a boost from 80 kph to 100 kmph, while the 17.32 km Madurai – Tirumangalam stretch experienced an elevation from 90 kph to 100 kmph in June.

A notable stride in electrification is the completion of 442 track kilometres in the 2022-2023 period. Ongoing electrification efforts, encompassing the Bhagavathipuram-Edamon route for 33 kilometres and the Madurai-Bodinayakanur route for 90 kilometres, are anticipated to conclude by December.

Financially, the division reported a commendable performance, with earnings for April to July 2023 amounting to $4.1845 bn. This reflects a substantial growth compared to the previous year's actual earnings of $3.2414 bn for the same period. The division's earnings from goods traffic saw an impressive 85.46% increase, while passenger traffic grew by 11.94% during the April-July 2023 period.

Freight transportation also witnessed remarkable progress, with the division transporting 1.15 million tonnes up to July, signifying a remarkable 99% increase compared to the previous year's figures for the same period. Furthermore, the goods shed at Theni is set to become operational in the near future, enhancing operational capabilities.
