Railways seek solution for erratic brake system in goods trains

On October 26, a goods train carrying 54 coal-laden waggons was moving down a slope in Jharkhand's Dhanbad division when the brakes failed. This immediately triggered a complicated safety measure. Officials moved the goods train, which was travelling at around 90 kmph at the time, onto a loop line inside a yard in Gurpa, Bihar, and caused a derailment.

According to sources, loco pilots have flagged over 80 cases of goods trains jumping signals in the last year or so because of an erratic brake system known as the Bogie Mounted Brake System (BMBS).

Around 90,000 wagons have been fitted with this braking system. Railways aims to figure out how to operate these safely. Loco pilots failing to adhere to a signal or jumping a signal is a grave offence, even leading to dismissal from the job.
